Sarasota, United States travel guide
Gulf Coast culture town with America's finest white-sand beach.

Sarasota mixes a serious arts scene, circus heritage and Siesta Key, whose quartz-powder sand regularly tops rankings of America's best beaches. Getting around
Fly into Sarasota-Bradenton (SRQ), ten minutes from downtown, or Tampa (TPA), an hour north. A car helps for island hopping, though Siesta Key's free trolley, downtown's walkability and ride-shares make a car-free stay workable. Beach parking fills fast in season, so arrive before 10am or use the trolley.
Safety
A safe, well-policed destination; standard beach-town awareness covers it. The Gulf is usually calm but rip currents appear on rough days, so heed the flag system. Afternoon thunderstorms are daily in summer, and hurricane season runs June-November. Sun is fierce year-round, and the fine quartz sand reflects it, so reapply sunscreen often.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best time to visit Sarasota?
November to April is dry, sunny and 70s-80s°F, the high season, with February-March busiest and priciest. May and October offer warm water and deals. Summer is hot and humid with daily storms and empty beaches, lovely for budget travelers who can handle the heat.
Is Siesta Key really the best beach in America?
It has won Dr. Beach's top ranking multiple times, and the sand genuinely is special: 99% pure quartz that stays cool underfoot and squeaks when you walk. The water is shallow, calm and clear. Crowds are the trade-off in season, so arrive early or visit the quieter Crescent Beach stretch to the south.
How many days do you need in Sarasota?
Three days covers Siesta Beach, The Ringling and a mangrove kayak. Four to five adds Myakka's alligators, St. Armands and Lido, and unhurried beach mornings. It also works brilliantly as a beach add-on to an Orlando theme-park trip, just 90 minutes away.
Is Sarasota worth visiting without a car?
Yes, more than most Florida beach towns. Stay downtown or on Siesta Key: the free Siesta Breeze trolley links the key's village and beaches, downtown is walkable with the bayfront and Selby Gardens, and ride-shares cover The Ringling. You only miss Myakka River State Park and outlying keys.
What is The Ringling and is it worth it?
The former estate of circus magnate John Ringling: a world-class art museum heavy on Baroque masters, the Venetian-Gothic Ca' d'Zan mansion, two circus museums and bayfront gardens. It is absolutely worth half a day and ranks among Florida's best cultural attractions. Mondays offer free art-museum entry.
Sarasota or Naples: which is better?
Sarasota is livelier and more cultural, with The Ringling, theaters and a real downtown, plus Siesta Key's famous sand. Naples, two hours south, is more polished and upscale with a calmer, retiree-leaning feel. Families and culture seekers pick Sarasota; golfers and quiet luxury seekers pick Naples.
Are there alligators near Sarasota?
Yes, and seeing them is easy at Myakka River State Park, 30 minutes east, where gators line the riverbanks and the canopy walkway crosses the treetops. In town, assume any fresh water has one and never swim in lakes or ponds. The Gulf beaches themselves are alligator-free.
