Hidden gems
- Sunset drum circle on Siesta Beach every Sunday
- Myakka River State Park's airboat-free gator viewing
- Historic Spanish Point's prehistoric mounds in Osprey
- The free Siesta Key Breeze trolley hopping the island
Getting around
Fly into Sarasota-Bradenton (SRQ), ten minutes from downtown, or Tampa (TPA), an hour north. A car helps for island hopping, though Siesta Key's free trolley, downtown's walkability and ride-shares make a car-free stay workable. Beach parking fills fast in season, so arrive before 10am or use the trolley.
Safety
A safe, well-policed destination; standard beach-town awareness covers it. The Gulf is usually calm but rip currents appear on rough days, so heed the flag system. Afternoon thunderstorms are daily in summer, and hurricane season runs June-November. Sun is fierce year-round, and the fine quartz sand reflects it, so reapply sunscreen often.
