Siargao, Philippines travel guide
Cloud 9 barrels, coconut roads and rock pools: the Philippines' surf island that never quite grew up.
- Best time to visit: March-October
- Average daily budget: $35 to $100 USD
- Ideal trip length: 4 to 6 days
Siargao is a teardrop of coconut palms in the Pacific with one of Asia's best right-hand reef breaks off its eastern shore. General Luna is the base: scooters, smoothie bowls, sunrise surf at Cloud 9 and long slow afternoons. Beyond it lie tidal rock pools, a mangrove-lined highway, and three tiny islands you reach by boat. Joy Plus times the tides, the swell and the island-hop so nothing is wasted.

Getting around
Fly into Sayak Airport (IAO) in Del Carmen from Manila, Cebu or Clark, then take a 45-minute van to General Luna. The alternative is a 2Go or fastcraft ferry from Surigao City to Dapa. Once here, everyone rents a scooter, roads are paved and scenic but slick when wet. Habal-habal motorbike taxis and tricycles cover short hops.
Safety
Scooter crashes are by far the biggest risk: ride slowly, wear a helmet, and check your travel insurance covers you without a local licence. The reef at Cloud 9 is shallow and sharp, so beginners should learn at Jacking Horse or Pacifico. Typhoon season runs roughly November to February and can close the airport. ATMs are limited and often empty, so bring cash. Tap water is not drinkable.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Siargao?
Four to six. One day for the three-island hop, one for the north-east loop with Magpupungko and Pacifico, one for Sugba Lagoon and the mangroves, and the rest for surfing, scootering the coconut roads and doing nothing. Surfers routinely stay two weeks or more.
When is the best time to visit Siargao?
March to October has the best mix of sunshine and swell, with August to November holding the biggest waves for experienced surfers. December to February is the habagat and typhoon-risk window with rougher seas and occasional flight cancellations. Beginners do best from March to June when waves are gentler.
Do you need to surf to enjoy Siargao?
Not at all. Island-hopping, the Magpupungko rock pools, Sugba Lagoon, cave pools, the coconut viewpoint and a genuinely good cafe and bar scene fill a week easily. That said, a beginner lesson at Jacking Horse is cheap and most people end up trying it.
How do you get to Siargao?
Fly into Sayak Airport in Del Carmen with direct flights from Manila, Cebu and Clark; a shared van covers the 45 minutes to General Luna. Otherwise fly to Surigao City and take the fastcraft ferry to Dapa, around two to three hours, then a tricycle onward.
Is Cloud 9 good for beginners?
No. Cloud 9 breaks over shallow, sharp reef and is best left to intermediate and advanced surfers. Beginners should learn at Jacking Horse next door, or on the beach breaks at Pacifico and Union. Lessons with board and instructor typically run about $15 to $20 USD an hour.
Do you need a scooter in Siargao?
It is the standard way to get around, and rentals are cheap at roughly $8 to $12 USD a day. Roads are paved and beautiful but get slippery in rain and dogs wander freely. If you have never ridden, use habal-habal motorbike taxis or hire a driver rather than learning on the island.
Is Siargao expensive?
Moderate. Hostel beds start near $12 USD, good rooms run $40 to $90, and meals range from $3 at local eateries to $12 at the trendy GL cafes. Island hopping is roughly $25 to $35 per person shared, and scooter rental is under $12 a day. Cash is essential as ATMs frequently run out.
