Skopje, North Macedonia travel guide

A quirky Balkan capital of grand statues, an Ottoman bazaar and easy access to wild mountains.

  • Best time to visit: May to June and September to October
  • Average daily budget: $35 to $60 USD
  • Ideal trip length: 1 to 2 days

Skopje is one of Europe's most surprising capitals, a city that reinvented its centre with colossal statues, neoclassical facades and fountains in a project that locals love to debate. Cross the Ottoman Stone Bridge, though, and you're suddenly in the Old Bazaar, the largest in the Balkans outside Istanbul, all mosques, tea houses and craftsmen. North Macedonia is one of the region's fastest-growing and most affordable destinations, with Lake Ohrid and dramatic canyons close by. Joy Plus makes sense of Skopje's eccentric mix and pairs it with the nature on its doorstep.
