Getting around
Tangier's Ibn Battouta airport is 15km southwest with flights across Europe. The Al Boraq high-speed train reaches Casablanca in 2h10 via Rabat, and ferries connect to Tarifa in Spain in about an hour from the city port. In town, petit taxis are cheap and plentiful; the medina and kasbah are walkable but hilly. Grand taxis serve Cap Spartel and Asilah.
Safety
Tangier is safe for visitors and far calmer than its hustler reputation suggests, though ignore the faux guides who approach around the port and ferry terminal. Standard city caution applies in the medina at night and on the beach after dark. The strait wind can be fierce year-round, so bring a layer even in summer. Dress modestly in the old town.
Frequently asked questions
Is Tangier worth visiting?
Yes. Tangier has shaken off its seedy reputation and now offers a restored kasbah, excellent museums, legendary cafes and a lively waterfront, all with views across to Spain. Two to three days is ideal, and it combines perfectly with Chefchaouen and Asilah.
How do you get from Tangier to Spain?
Ferries run from Tangier's city port to Tarifa in about 1 hour, with multiple daily departures, and from Tanger Med port (45km east) to Algeciras. Book ahead in summer. The city-port route is the most convenient, landing you in the heart of both towns.
How many days do you need in Tangier?
Two to three days. One day covers the kasbah, medina and Grand Socco, a second handles Cap Spartel, the Hercules Caves and Café Hafa, and a third opens up Asilah or a slow museum-and-cafe day. It's also a popular day trip from Tarifa.
When is the best time to visit Tangier?
April to June and September to November, when temperatures sit around 20 to 27°C and the notorious strait wind eases. Summer is busy with ferries and Moroccan holidaymakers, while winter is mild but windy and wetter. Pack a windbreaker in every season.
Is Tangier safe for tourists?
Yes, with normal city precautions. The main issue is persistent unofficial guides around the port and Grand Socco, so decline politely and firmly. The medina and kasbah are fine by day and reasonably lively at night; use petit taxis for late returns. Violent crime against tourists is rare.
Can you do a day trip to Tangier from Spain?
Yes, it's one of the classic day trips from Andalusia. The Tarifa ferry takes about an hour each way, leaving time for the kasbah, medina, lunch and Café Hafa. Go with a licensed guide or a clear plan, as one day is tight, and carry your passport with the correct visa status.
What is Tangier famous for?
Its position on the Strait of Gibraltar, its Interzone era as an international city that attracted Paul Bowles, William Burroughs, Tennessee Williams and the Rolling Stones, and landmarks like Café Hafa, the kasbah and the Hercules Caves. Today it's equally known for its fast-modernising waterfront and port.
