Taormina, Italy travel guide
Sicily's cliffside stage: a Greek theatre framing Etna, Ionian coves and baroque corso strolling.
- Best time to visit: April-June and September-October
- Average daily budget: $140 to $260 USD
- Ideal trip length: 3 to 5 days
Taormina hangs on a terrace 200 metres above the Ionian Sea, with Mount Etna smoking on the horizon and a Greek theatre that has been stealing the view for 2,300 years. The town is small, steep and gorgeously photogenic, which is exactly why cruise crowds pour up the hill each midday. Stay overnight and the corso empties into something far more romantic, with Etna hikes, Isola Bella swims and Castelmola sunsets all within reach.

Getting around
Catania Fontanarossa airport is about an hour away by bus or car, and trains stop at Taormina-Giardini station below the cliff, from where a bus climbs to town. Taormina itself is pedestrianised and walkable but very steep, with parking restricted to paid garages at the edge. A cable car links the centre to Mazzaro beach in three minutes, and buses run to Castelmola, Giardini Naxos and Etna tours.
Safety
Taormina is safe and heavily touristed, with petty theft in the cable car and corso crowds the main concern. The bigger risks are physical: steep, slippery lanes and staircases, cliff paths without railings, and strong summer sun with little shade at the theatre. On Etna, temperatures drop sharply and volcanic activity can close summit access at short notice, so only go with authorised guides and check conditions the same morning.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Taormina?
Three to five days. One day covers the Teatro Antico, Corso Umberto and the Villa Comunale gardens, one is for Isola Bella and the Mazzaro beaches, and one for Mount Etna. Extra days let you add Castelmola, the Alcantara Gorges or a day trip to Catania or Siracusa.
When is the best time to visit Taormina?
April to June and September to October give warm weather, swimmable sea and manageable crowds. July and August are hot, expensive and packed with cruise passengers and Italian holidaymakers. Winter is mild and very quiet, with some hotels and beach clubs closed but the theatre and town still open.
Is Taormina worth visiting?
Yes. The combination of an ancient Greek theatre, a cliffside medieval town and Mount Etna on the skyline is genuinely rare, and the food is excellent. The caveat is crowding: between roughly 11am and 4pm in summer the main street is shoulder to shoulder, so staying overnight and exploring early is what makes it worthwhile.
How do you get from Catania to Taormina?
Buses run frequently from Catania airport and the city centre to Taormina in about 60 to 90 minutes and drop you near the old town. Trains take around 45 minutes to Taormina-Giardini station, then a local bus or taxi climbs the hill. Driving takes under an hour but parking in town is limited and expensive.
Can you visit Mount Etna from Taormina?
Yes, it is the standard day trip. Organised tours run from Taormina to the Rifugio Sapienza base at 1,900m in about 90 minutes, with an optional cable car and 4x4 to roughly 2,900m. Go in the morning before cloud builds, bring layers, and expect summit access to depend on volcanic activity.
Does Taormina have good beaches?
The town sits on a cliff, so beaches are below at Mazzaro, Isola Bella and Spisone, reached by cable car, bus or a steep path. They are pebble rather than sand, with clear water and beach clubs renting loungers. For long sandy stretches, head to Giardini Naxos or Letojanni a few minutes up the coast.
Is Taormina expensive?
It is one of Sicily's priciest towns, particularly for hotels with sea views in summer. Budget around $140 to $260 a day. Staying in Giardini Naxos or Letojanni, eating away from Corso Umberto and using buses instead of taxis can cut that by a third without losing much.
