Hidden gems
- Castelmola's Bar Turrisi for almond wine and one of Sicily's most eccentric interiors.
- The Saracen staircase, a steep path of hundreds of steps from Taormina up to Castelmola.
- Alcantara Gorges, basalt canyon walls you can wade through on a hot afternoon.
- Early morning on Corso Umberto before the first cable car and coaches arrive.
Getting around
Catania Fontanarossa airport is about an hour away by bus or car, and trains stop at Taormina-Giardini station below the cliff, from where a bus climbs to town. Taormina itself is pedestrianised and walkable but very steep, with parking restricted to paid garages at the edge. A cable car links the centre to Mazzaro beach in three minutes, and buses run to Castelmola, Giardini Naxos and Etna tours.
Safety
Taormina is safe and heavily touristed, with petty theft in the cable car and corso crowds the main concern. The bigger risks are physical: steep, slippery lanes and staircases, cliff paths without railings, and strong summer sun with little shade at the theatre. On Etna, temperatures drop sharply and volcanic activity can close summit access at short notice, so only go with authorised guides and check conditions the same morning.
