Getting around
Aqaba is compact and the downtown and corniche are walkable, while taxis are cheap and plentiful for reaching South Beach, the dive centres, Tala Bay and the airport; agree the fare or ask for the meter first. Ride apps have limited coverage. For Wadi Rum (about an hour) and Petra (about two hours), hire a driver, join a tour or rent a car, which gives the most flexibility. Minibuses run to Petra and Amman but are slower and less convenient for day trips.
Safety
Jordan is among the safest countries in the region and Aqaba is a relaxed, tourist-friendly city comfortable for solo travellers, including women, who generally report friendly locals. Petty theft is uncommon but keep an eye on valuables on beaches and in the souk. The main risks are practical: strong sun and heat, so hydrate and use reef-safe sunscreen, and standard water-safety care when diving and snorkelling. Dress modestly in town away from the beach and resorts. Check current regional travel advice, though Aqaba itself is firmly geared to tourism.
