Getting around

Amman is hilly and spread out, so walking works within a neighbourhood but not between them. Taxis are cheap and metered (insist on the meter) and ride apps (Careem, Uber) are reliable and easy. The downtown sights cluster together on foot. For Jerash, the Dead Sea, Petra and Wadi Rum, hire a driver, rent a car or use the JETT tourist buses. The new bus rapid transit helps on key corridors.

Safety

Jordan is among the safest countries in the Middle East and Amman is welcoming and comfortable for solo travellers, including women, with locals known for hospitality. Petty crime is low but watch belongings in crowded souks. Dress modestly, especially downtown and at religious sites (covered shoulders and knees; headscarf in mosques). Taxi overcharging is the most common annoyance, so use the meter or apps. Check current regional travel advice before visiting border areas.
