Getting around
Downtown is walkable and the River Arts District is a 10-minute drive or a long riverside walk. A car is essential for the Blue Ridge Parkway, waterfalls and Biltmore's grounds; parking downtown is metered garages. Asheville Regional Airport is 25 minutes south with direct flights to a dozen US hubs, and Charlotte is two hours by road for wider connections. Rideshares are reliable in town but thin out in the mountains.
Safety
Asheville is a safe small city; the main issues are petty theft from parked cars at trailheads and rowdy late-night crowds on a few downtown blocks. Mountain driving is the bigger risk: the Blue Ridge Parkway has no guardrails in places, closes for ice from late autumn to spring, and has no fuel stations. Check waterfall trail conditions, as slick rocks near falls cause serious accidents every year, and be aware black bears are common in and around town.
