Getting around

Bangor International Airport (BGR) is an hour away, Portland three hours, Boston about five by car. The free Island Explorer shuttle links the town, campgrounds and major Acadia trailheads from late June to mid-October, which is often faster than fighting for parking. Downtown Bar Harbor itself is entirely walkable, and bike rental is ideal for the carriage roads.

Safety

Very safe town with minimal crime. The risks are coastal and seasonal: rogue waves at Thunder Hole and Otter Cliff, slick granite after rain, and an incoming tide that strands people on the Bar Island sandbar every summer. Ocean water stays around 12-15C even in August. Many businesses close from November to April, and ticks are common on wooded trails.
