Getting around
There is no public transport: you need a car. Drive Highway 1 south from Carmel (the classic approach) or north from San Simeon, checking Caltrans for landslide closures first. Fuel is scarce and expensive ($8+/gallon); fill up in Carmel or Cambria. Cell service barely exists, so download offline maps and hike info before you go.
Safety
Big Sur's dangers are environmental. Cliffs are unfenced and crumbly: stay behind barriers at overlooks. Sneaker waves and rip currents make most beaches deadly for swimming. Poison oak lines the trails. Fog can erase the road in seconds: use pullouts, never stop in the lane. In fire season (Aug-Oct), check evacuation alerts and carry water and a full tank.
