Getting around
Fly into Destin-Fort Walton Beach Airport (VPS), 25 minutes away, or Pensacola (PNS), 1 hour west. You need a car: Destin is a 10km strip along US-98 and summer traffic crawls. Do errands early, walk or bike to nearby beaches, and budget 30 to 45 minutes to reach 30A. Many resorts and condos include beach shuttles.
Safety
Destin is safe, family-oriented and easy. The ocean is the danger: learn the beach flag system (double red means stay out, purple means jellyfish), as rip currents kill swimmers here most years. Summer heat tops 33°C with fierce UV: the white sand reflects it back. Hurricane season runs June to November, peaking in September.
