  • Backstreet meyhanes serving meze and raki away from the marina crowds.

Getting around

Bodrum town is compact and walkable around the castle, bazaar and marina. To explore the wider peninsula, dolmuş minibuses run frequently and cheaply between the main villages, making them the easiest budget option. Taxis are available but pricier, so agree fares first. Renting a car or scooter gives the most freedom to reach quieter bays. Water taxis and gulet boat trips connect coastal spots and are a scenic way to travel. Bodrum's airport is about 35 km away, around 45 minutes by shuttle or taxi from the centre.

Safety

Bodrum is a well-developed, generally very safe resort area, comfortable for solo travellers and women, with a relaxed, cosmopolitan feel. Petty theft can occur in crowded bars, beaches and markets, so keep valuables secure, and take normal care on big nights out in the busy nightlife areas. Use licensed taxis and agree fares. Practical risks are the usual coastal ones: strong summer sun and heat, so hydrate, and water safety on boat trips and while swimming. Dress is relaxed at the coast but modest in mosques. Check current travel advice, though tourism here is firmly established.
