Hidden gems

  • Beck's Brewery tour on the western bank of the Weser, with tastings.
  • The windmill in the Wallanlagen park moat gardens ringing the old town.
  • Bremerhaven's German Emigration Center, an hour north by train.
  • The Ratskeller, one of Germany's oldest wine cellars, with a 1727 vintage in storage.

Getting around

The old town is entirely walkable in an afternoon, and a dense tram network covers the Viertel, the university and the airport in 11 minutes. Bikes are everywhere and the terrain is flat. Trains reach Hamburg in an hour, Hanover in an hour and Bremerhaven in about 40 minutes.

Safety

Bremen is safe overall, though the area immediately around the Hauptbahnhof and Discomeile can feel rough late at night, so take a tram rather than walk. Keep valuables secure in crowds on the Schlachte and at the Freimarkt fair. Cycle lanes are heavily used, so check before stepping off a kerb.
