Hidden gems

  • The quiet frescoed churches of the Soganli and Ihlara valleys away from the crowds.
  • Sunrise viewpoints in Uçhisar that look down on the balloon launch.
  • Traditional testi kebab, slow-cooked and cracked open at the table.
  • Local wineries around Ürgüp producing wine from ancient indigenous grapes.

Getting around

Cappadocia is spread across several villages, so getting around takes planning. Göreme is walkable and central, and many cave hotels offer shuttle pickups. Local dolmuş minibuses connect Göreme, Ürgüp, Avanos and Uçhisar but are infrequent. The easiest ways to see the scattered sights are organised day tours (the classic Red and Green tours), hiring a driver, or renting a car for full freedom. Hiking between valleys is rewarding for the fit. The nearest airports, Nevsehir and Kayseri, are around 45 minutes to an hour away by shuttle or taxi.

Safety

Cappadocia is a very safe, tourist-friendly region, comfortable for solo travellers and women, with a relaxed rural atmosphere and low crime. The main risks are practical rather than criminal: balloon rides are generally well-regulated but choose a reputable operator, and rides are cancelled in poor weather for safety, so build in buffer days. Valley hikes can be hot, exposed and easy to lose your way on, so carry water, wear good shoes and start early. Underground cities are tight and steep. Winters are cold and icy. Check current travel advice, but tourism here is well-established and welcoming.
