Hidden gems

  • Riverside Market for South Island produce and street food.
  • The Quake City museum for an honest look at the city's recent history.
  • Taylors Mistake, a quiet beach and coastal walk past Sumner.
  • Punting on the Avon, a gentle, very Christchurch afternoon.

Getting around

The flat city centre is walkable and cyclable, with a restored historic tram loop and easy buses. A car is best for Banks Peninsula, Akaroa and South Island road trips. The airport is 20 minutes from the centre, and the TranzAlpine departs from the city.

Safety

Very safe and relaxed. The main considerations are natural: the region is seismically active (minor tremors are normal), the alpine weather changes fast, and the sun is intense thanks to thin ozone - wear strong sunscreen. Coastal swimming has cold water and rips.
