Getting around
The town centre and lakefront are walkable, but a car is best for the geothermal parks (Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu) and lakes outside town. Rotorua is about three hours from Auckland and an hour from Taupo by road. Many activities offer pickups.
Safety
Very safe. Stay on marked paths in geothermal areas - the ground can be unstable and the water scalding. The sulphur smell is harmless. Check water quality before swimming in hot creeks, and the alpine/forest weather can change, so carry layers.
