- The palm-fringed beach of Preveli at the mouth of a river gorge.

- The boat-only village of Loutro on the south coast.
Getting around
Crete is large, so renting a car is by far the best way to explore its beaches, gorges and villages; distances between Chania and the east coast can take three to four hours. Heraklion and Chania have airports and a ferry port linking to Athens and the islands. Intercity buses (KTEL) run frequently along the north coast between the main towns and to popular beaches, but reaching remote spots and mountain villages really requires your own wheels. Roads are good on the coast but winding inland.
Safety
Crete is very safe with low crime, and solo travellers, including women, feel comfortable across the island. The main risks are practical: mountain and coastal roads are winding and narrow, so drive carefully, and summer heat can be intense, especially on exposed hikes like the Samaria Gorge, so start early and carry plenty of water. Some south-coast beaches have strong currents. Petty theft is rare but keep valuables secure on busy beaches and in tourist hubs.
