Getting around

Dusseldorf airport is 15 minutes from the centre by S-Bahn, and the Hauptbahnhof has fast ICE trains to Cologne in 25 minutes and Amsterdam or Frankfurt in about two hours. U-Bahn, trams and buses cover the city well on a single VRR ticket, and the centre is flat and walkable, especially along the Rhine promenade. Bike hire and e-scooters work well; a car is unnecessary and parking is costly.

Safety

Dusseldorf is a safe, wealthy city where the main issues are pickpocketing and drunken friction in the Altstadt late at night, plus occasional bike theft. The area immediately around the Hauptbahnhof feels rougher after dark but is heavily policed. Watch for silent trams and fast cycle lanes when crossing streets, and note that hotel prices and availability swing wildly during major trade fairs at the Messe.
