  • Rooftop views over the lagoon from the cathedral bell tower.

Getting around

Faro's compact centre, old town and marina are easily walkable, and the city is small enough to cover on foot. To reach the barrier-island beaches, take the seasonal ferries from the harbour to Ilha Deserta and Ilha da Culatra, or a bus and bridge to Praia de Faro. Trains and buses link Faro along the Algarve coast to towns like Tavira, Olhão and Lagos, and the airport is just a short bus or taxi ride away.

Safety

Faro is a safe, easygoing city with low crime, requiring only standard precautions against petty theft in the marina, beaches and busier tourist spots. The main hazards are natural - strong Atlantic sun, currents and tides around the barrier islands - so use sun protection, swim where it's supervised, and check ferry and tide times. The Ria Formosa's channels can be exposed, so heed local advice on boat trips and walks.
