Getting around

Fortaleza is large and spread along the coast, so ride apps like Uber and 99 are the easiest, cheapest and safest way to get around, preferable to street taxis. The seafront districts of Meireles and Praia de Iracema are walkable and pleasant, especially along the Beira Mar promenade, but you'll use ride apps to reach other areas like Praia do Futuro or the centre. The city has buses and a limited metro, but they're less convenient for visitors. For day trips to beaches like Jericoacoara, Canoa Quebrada or Cumbuco, use organised tours, transfers or a rental car, as some are several hours away over varied roads.

Safety

Fortaleza has a higher crime rate than many tourist cities, so caution is essential. Stick to the well-frequented seafront areas of Meireles and Praia de Iracema, use ride apps instead of walking long distances (especially after dark), and keep valuables out of sight. Avoid quiet stretches of beach at night and don't wander into unfamiliar neighbourhoods. Praia de Iracema's nightlife is fun but stay alert and travel by ride app. Beaches can have strong currents, so heed warnings. Solo travellers should be particularly careful after dark and rely on ride apps. With sensible precautions and by staying in tourist zones, most visitors enjoy the city safely.
