Galle in 5 days

A Dutch-colonial fort town on the Indian Ocean, all boutique cafés, ramparts and golden beaches nearby. Best time to visit: December to April. Average daily budget: $35 to $75 USD.

Day 1, Get oriented

Day 3, Local neighbourhoods

Base: Unawatuna, The popular sheltered beach bay just east of Galle, lined with restaurants and guesthouses.

Morning: See the stilt fishermen. Watch the iconic pole fishermen near Koggala, an enduring south-coast image.

Day 4, Day trip or nature

Base: Dalawella & Mirissa, The string of beach towns down the coast known for surf, palm swings and whale watching.

Morning: Galle Lighthouse and the old Dutch church inside the fort.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around

Galle Fort is small and best explored entirely on foot. To reach the beaches and coastal towns, tuk-tuks are cheap and everywhere, and ride apps (PickMe, Uber) operate. Trains along the scenic coastal line connect Galle to Colombo and the beach towns, while a hired driver suits exploring the wider south coast.

Safety

Galle is safe with low crime and friendly locals. Watch belongings in busy spots and agree tuk-tuk fares or use the app meter. Ocean currents can be strong at some beaches, so heed local advice and flags. Drink bottled or filtered water, and dress modestly when visiting temples.
