The old town is compact and best explored on foot or by bike, that's where the murals and food are. Grab is cheap for longer trips to Penang Hill, Gurney Drive or the beaches at Batu Ferringhi. The free CAT shuttle bus loops the heritage core.

Safety

George Town is very safe and easygoing, with petty theft the only minor risk, watch bags on scooters near the road. The tropical heat and humidity are the real challenge, so hydrate and pace yourself. Tap water is best boiled or filtered; bottled is cheap and everywhere.
