Penang's heritage capital: street-art lanes, clan houses, and arguably the best street food in Asia. Best time to visit: December-April (drier season). Average daily budget: $30 to $65 USD.

Day 1, Get oriented

Base: UNESCO Core Zone, The heritage heart: shophouses, murals, clan houses, and Armenian Street.

Morning: Street-art trail. Hunt down Ernest Zacharevic's murals and the wrought-iron caricatures on foot.

Evening: Hawker feast at a night market. Char kway teow, assam laksa, cendol, order across stalls and share.

Eat: Char kway teow (wok-fried flat noodles)

Day 2, Go deeper

Base: Little India, Garland stalls, temples, banana-leaf meals, and Bollywood soundtracks.

Morning: Khoo Kongsi clan house. The most ornate of the Chinese clan temples, dripping with carving.

Evening: Penang Hill & Kek Lok Si. Funicular up for the views, then the vast hillside temple below.

Eat: Assam laksa (tangy fish noodle soup)

Day 3, Hidden side

Base: Clan Jetties, Stilted waterfront villages of the old Chinese clans, best near sunset.

Morning: Breakfast at a kopitiam: kaya toast, soft eggs and local coffee.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around

The old town is compact and best explored on foot or by bike, that's where the murals and food are. Grab is cheap for longer trips to Penang Hill, Gurney Drive or the beaches at Batu Ferringhi. The free CAT shuttle bus loops the heritage core.

Safety

George Town is very safe and easygoing, with petty theft the only minor risk, watch bags on scooters near the road. The tropical heat and humidity are the real challenge, so hydrate and pace yourself. Tap water is best boiled or filtered; bottled is cheap and everywhere.
