Getting around

Guatapé town is tiny and best explored entirely on foot, its colourful streets, main square and lakeside malecón are all within a short, pleasant walk. The El Peñol rock sits a few kilometres outside town and is reached by tuk-tuk, taxi or a short drive, then climbed on foot up its 700-plus steps. To explore the vast reservoir you'll take boat tours or water taxis from the malecón. Most visitors arrive from Medellín, around two hours away, either on a direct public bus from the North Bus Terminal, by private transfer, or on an organised day tour. Renting a car is also an option for combining Guatapé with nearby Antioquian villages.

Safety

Guatapé is one of the safest and most tourist-friendly destinations in Colombia, a relaxed lakeside town where visitors, families and solo travellers generally feel very comfortable. Petty theft is uncommon but possible in crowded areas, so keep valuables secure as you would anywhere. The main practical concerns are physical: the 700-plus steps up El Peñol are steep and can be tiring in the heat, so take water and pace yourself; the stairs and some town streets are steep and uneven; and on the lake, choose reputable boat operators and wear life jackets. Weather can change quickly in the highlands, so bring sun protection and a light layer. With ordinary care, most visitors find Guatapé safe and easy to enjoy.
