Hidden gems
- The Dartmouth ferry, the cheapest harbour cruise in Canada at bus fare.
- Halifax Public Gardens, a perfectly preserved Victorian garden downtown.
- The Africville Museum, telling the story of a demolished Black community.
- Fisherman's Cove in Eastern Passage for boat sheds without the tour buses.
Getting around
Downtown is compact and walkable, if hilly, and Halifax Transit buses plus the harbour ferry cover the rest for about $2.75. Halifax Stanfield Airport (YHZ) is 35 minutes out, with the Maritime Bus at roughly $25 or a taxi around $50. For Peggy's Cove, Lunenburg or the Cabot Trail you'll want a rental car; day tours exist but limit your timing.
Safety
Halifax is a safe, low-crime city where the main street-level issue is weekend rowdiness around the Argyle Street bars. Coastal safety matters more: never stand on the black rocks at Peggy's Cove, where rogue waves have killed people, and check marine forecasts before boat trips. Fog rolls in fast and hurricane season runs August to October.
