Hidden gems
- Sunrise over the Himalayas from Nagarkot, an hour from the city.

- Garden of Dreams, a serene neoclassical garden walled off from Thamel's chaos.
- Asan Tole market at dawn, when the spice and produce trade is in full swing.
Getting around
The old city and Thamel are best on foot, though traffic, dust and a lack of pavements make it intense. Use ride-hailing apps (Pathao, InDrive) and metered taxis for longer hops; agree fares first if the meter is 'broken'. Air pollution can be heavy, so a mask helps on bad days.
Safety
Kathmandu is generally safe and Nepalis are famously warm and helpful. Petty theft and scams (fake trekking guides, overpriced gear) are the main risks. Solo female travellers report feeling comfortable with normal precautions. Drink only bottled or filtered water, watch for chaotic traffic, and check the latest on altitude and trekking permits before heading to the mountains.
