The city is compact and walkable between districts, and the Kanazawa Loop Bus and flat-fare city buses connect the station, Kenroku-en and the old quarters cheaply. Cycling is pleasant on the flat streets, with rental and share bikes available. The JR train from Tokyo via the Hokuriku Shinkansen reaches the city in about 2.5 hours.
Safety
Kanazawa is extremely safe, like the rest of Japan, with very low crime and a comfortable atmosphere for solo travellers including women, even at night. There are no real safety concerns beyond ordinary care. Practical notes: it's one of Japan's rainiest cities, so carry an umbrella, and winters can bring snow, making good footwear useful.
