Hidden gems

  • Sunday brunch and live jazz at an uptown Kingston restaurant.
  • Hellshire Beach for fried fish and festival, a short drive out of the city.
  • The National Gallery of Jamaica, the Caribbean's oldest and most important art museum.
  • Sunrise hike to Blue Mountain Peak, starting around 2am to catch the light.

Getting around

Norman Manley International sits on the Palisadoes spit about 30 minutes from New Kingston. Route taxis and buses are cheap but crowded and confusing for first-timers. Most visitors use licensed red-plate taxis, hotel drivers or ride-hailing apps, which are affordable and far simpler. Hiring a driver for a day is the standard way to combine the Blue Mountains with city sights. Driving yourself is possible but city traffic is heavy and aggressive.

Safety

Kingston has a serious crime reputation, but visitors who stay uptown around New Kingston, use trusted drivers and avoid wandering into unfamiliar downtown or inner-city areas rarely have problems. Do not walk at night outside busy uptown streets, keep phones and jewellery discreet, and visit Trench Town or downtown with a reputable guide. Check current travel advisories, as security conditions vary by neighbourhood and can change.
