Hidden gems

Getting around

Kos International Airport sits mid-island, about 25 minutes from Kos Town. Buses connect the main resorts and beaches but thin out in the evening and shoulder season. The island is famously flat, so bicycles handle Kos Town and nearby beaches easily on dedicated paths, while a rental car or scooter is best for Kefalos, Zia and the south coast. Ferries and catamarans link Rhodes, Kalymnos, Nisyros and Bodrum in Turkey.

Safety

Kos is safe with very low crime, and the main issues are sunburn, dehydration and scooter accidents on gravel-edged roads. Some beaches have strong afternoon winds and undertow, especially on the exposed south and west coasts. Sea urchins are common on rocky entries. If day-tripping to Bodrum, carry your passport and check visa rules for your nationality before booking.
