Getting around
Direct TGVs reach La Rochelle from Paris Montparnasse in about 2h30, and the airport is 10 minutes from the centre. The old town is compact and flat, and the Yélo network of city bikes, buses and small sea shuttles across the harbour covers everything else cheaply. Buses cross to Île de Ré, but renting a bike on the island is far better than driving in summer.
Safety
La Rochelle is a safe, family-friendly city with only routine summer pickpocketing around the old port. Atlantic conditions deserve respect: strong currents and big tidal ranges on Île de Ré beaches, so swim at supervised spots and check tide times before walking out on the sand. The bridge to the island jams badly on July and August weekends.
