  • The puppet theatre (Opera dei Pupi) for a traditional Sicilian art form.
  • Sunset from the terrace of the Palazzo dei Normanni overlooking the city.

Getting around

The historic centre is compact and walkable, though the streets are chaotic. City buses are cheap but notoriously unreliable. Taxis are affordable for longer hops. The train station connects to Cefalù and other Sicilian towns, and a bus reaches Mondello beach in 20 minutes.

Safety

Palermo is generally safe but chaotic. Watch for pickpockets in crowded markets and on buses. The traffic is aggressive and crossing the road requires confidence. Summer heat is intense, so plan a midday break and carry water. Most central areas are fine at night.
