Getting around
Perugia San Francesco airport is 20 minutes out with limited flights, while trains from Florence take about two hours and from Rome around two and a half. Inside the city the MiniMetro and a network of public escalators do the climbing for you between the lower station area and the hilltop centre, which is then fully walkable. Trains reach Assisi, Spello and Orvieto easily; a car helps for hill towns and vineyards.
Safety
Perugia is a safe university city where petty theft around the station and Fontivegge is the main concern, along with lively but harmless student nightlife. The old town is steep with uneven paving and long stairways, so proper shoes matter and mobility can be a real issue. Escalators close overnight, leaving steep walks. Summer heat is intense on exposed terraces.
