Getting around
Central Playa del Carmen is flat and very walkable, especially the 5th Avenue corridor and the beach. Taxis are plentiful but unmetered, so agree the fare first; colectivos (shared vans) along Highway 307 are a cheap way to reach cenotes, Tulum and Akumal. The Cancún airport is about an hour north via private transfer, ADO bus or rental car. A car or organised tours make the scattered cenotes and ruins easiest to combine.
Safety
Playa del Carmen's tourist zones are generally safe, with petty theft and the usual scams the main concerns, so use official taxis or colectivos and keep valuables secure. Stick to ATMs inside banks, watch belongings on the beach, and use licensed operators for tours and diving. The Caribbean side is calmer than the Pacific, but always heed cenote and sea conditions and any sargassum-seaweed advisories.
