Getting around

Central Portland is flat, compact and very walkable or bikeable, and the city has an excellent transit system, the MAX light rail (including a line from the airport), streetcars and buses, covering most neighbourhoods. Bike-share (Biketown) is widely available. A car isn't needed in town but is the easiest way to reach the Columbia River Gorge, Mount Hood, wine country or the coast for day trips.

Safety

Portland's main neighbourhoods are generally safe with normal city awareness, though parts of downtown can feel rougher and you may notice visible homelessness; stay alert at night and use transit or rideshare after dark. Car break-ins are common, so never leave anything visible in a parked vehicle. On any gorge or mountain outing, check trail conditions and weather and stick to marked paths near waterfalls.
