Getting around
Providence is genuinely walkable - downtown to College Hill is 15 minutes on foot. RIPTA buses cover the rest cheaply, and the MBTA commuter rail reaches Boston in about an hour. A car is only useful for Newport day trips.
Safety
Very safe for solo travellers, including at night downtown and on College Hill. Standard care in quieter industrial pockets south of downtown. Winter sidewalks ice over - bring grippy boots.
