Getting around

The old town, Malecón and Zona Romántica are walkable, though the streets are cobblestoned and hilly, so wear good shoes. Cheap city buses and taxis (agree the fare first, or use Uber) connect the marina, hotel zone and across the bay to Nuevo Vallarta and Bucerías. Water taxis from Los Muertos pier and Boca de Tomatlán reach the southern beaches. The airport is about 15 minutes north of the centre.

Safety

Puerto Vallarta is one of Mexico's safer and most tourist-friendly resort cities, with petty theft and typical scams the main concerns, so use official taxis or Uber, watch belongings and drink responsibly. The cobblestone streets and steep hills are a real trip hazard, so step carefully, and on the Pacific beaches heed surf and rip-current flags, swimming where it's marked safe.
