Getting around
Roatán is long and thin, and getting around depends on where you stay. Shared minibuses (colectivos) run along the main road and are cheap, while taxis are plentiful, agree the fare first and note 'collectivo' shared taxis cost less than private ones. Many visitors rent a car, scooter or golf cart for flexibility, especially to reach the quieter East End. Within West End and West Bay you can mostly walk, with a cheap water taxi connecting the two. To arrive, fly into Roatán's Juan Manuel Gálvez International Airport, or take the ferry from La Ceiba on the mainland.
Safety
Roatán is considerably safer than mainland Honduras and very used to tourists, with solo travellers, including women, generally feeling comfortable in the main tourist areas of West End and West Bay. Petty theft is the main concern, so secure valuables, don't leave items on the beach and avoid isolated areas alone after dark. The biggest risks are water-related: dive and snorkel with reputable, certified operators, respect currents and boat traffic, and don't touch coral or marine life. Use sun protection, drink bottled water, and take standard precautions on roads and at night.
