Hidden gems

  • Kerosene Creek, a free natural hot stream in the forest south of town.
  • The Redwoods Treewalk lit up at night with the Nightlights installation.
  • Lake Tikitapu (Blue Lake) for a clean, quiet swim.
  • Whakarewarewa living village, where locals still cook in the steam.

Getting around

The town centre and lakefront are walkable, but a car is best for the geothermal parks (Wai-O-Tapu, Waimangu) and lakes outside town. Rotorua is about three hours from Auckland and an hour from Taupo by road. Many activities offer pickups.

Safety

Very safe. Stay on marked paths in geothermal areas - the ground can be unstable and the water scalding. The sulphur smell is harmless. Check water quality before swimming in hot creeks, and the alpine/forest weather can change, so carry layers.
