Hidden gems
- Musee de l'Annonciade, a small chapel gallery of Signac, Matisse and Bonnard.
- Chateau Minuty and other peninsula vineyards for rose tasting a few minutes inland.
- Plage des Graniers, a walkable local beach with one relaxed restaurant.
- Sunset drinks in Gassin, looking down over the whole gulf without the port crowds.
Getting around
The nearest airports are Nice, about 90 minutes by road, and Toulon-Hyeres, around an hour. In summer the peninsula road backs up badly, so the Bateaux Verts ferry from Sainte-Maxime or Saint-Raphael is often faster and far more pleasant. The village itself is walkable, with paid car parks on the edge. A car or scooter helps for Pampelonne, Ramatuelle and the vineyards, though beach clubs run shuttles.
Safety
Saint-Tropez is a safe, heavily policed town where the real risks are financial rather than physical: unadvertised beach club minimums, aggressive parking fines and pickpockets in port crowds. Summer traffic and scooter congestion cause most accidents. Swim between flags at Pampelonne, which is open sea with occasional strong currents, and be aware that wildfire risk closes some inland roads in dry, windy periods.
