Getting around

Santa Fe's historic core, the Plaza, Canyon Road and the Railyard, is compact and best explored on foot, and a free downtown shuttle and city buses help with longer hops, including up to Museum Hill. A car is useful for reaching Museum Hill easily and essential for the day trips to pueblos, Bandelier, Taos and the wider landscapes. Within the centre, though, walking is the most enjoyable way to soak up the adobe streets.

Safety

Santa Fe is a generally safe destination with normal precautions sufficient in the walkable tourist areas. The biggest adjustment is the elevation: at around 7,200 feet, altitude can cause headaches and fatigue, so hydrate, ease into activity and limit alcohol at first. The high desert brings strong sun, big temperature swings and dry air, so use sun protection, carry water and layers, and take care on trails and mountain roads.
