Hidden gems
- The Ballard Locks, where boats pass between the sound and the lake and salmon climb a fish ladder.
- The Olympic Sculpture Park, a free waterfront art park with mountain and sound views.
- Discovery Park, a huge wild headland with beaches, a lighthouse and forest trails.
- The original Starbucks and the gum-covered Post Alley wall near Pike Place.
Getting around
Downtown, Pike Place and Seattle Center are walkable, and the Link light rail connects the airport to downtown and Capitol Hill cheaply. Buses, the streetcar and the monorail fill in the gaps, and an ORCA card or contactless tap covers transit. Ferries leave from the downtown waterfront. Uber and Lyft are everywhere. A car helps for Mount Rainier and the Olympic Peninsula.
Safety
Seattle is generally safe in the central and residential neighbourhoods visitors frequent. There's visible homelessness in parts of downtown and near the market, and some areas feel rougher at night, so use normal city awareness. The weather is famously wet and grey from autumn to spring; pack a rain layer and waterproof shoes rather than an umbrella.
