Hidden gems

  • Mezquita del Cristo de la Luz, a tiny 10th-century mosque at the top of the hill.
  • The Roman baths beneath Plaza Amador de los Ríos.
  • The rooftop terrace bars on Calle Alfileritos after the day-trippers leave.
  • The Senda Ecológica riverside path, a flat walk with constant city views.

Getting around

The old town is all steep cobbles and steps, so wear real shoes; a series of outdoor escalators near Puerta de Bisagra saves the worst climb. Avanza buses loop the city and cross to the miradors. Madrid Atocha is 33 minutes by AVE train, from around $16 each way, with buses from Plaza Elíptica taking an hour for less. No car is needed inside the walls, and driving there is a genuinely bad idea.

Safety

Toledo is very safe, with almost no street crime beyond occasional pickpocketing near the cathedral. The real hazards are the cobbles, the gradients and July-August heat that regularly tops 38C, so carry water and rest in the middle of the day. Streets are poorly lit and disorienting at night, so save an offline map.
