Getting around

The centre is compact and fully walkable, with rental bikes ($5 a day) ideal for reaching outlying cenotes. Colectivos and taxis serve the cenotes and ruins cheaply. ADO buses link Valladolid to Mérida (2 hours), Cancún (2 hours), Playa del Carmen (90 minutes) and Chichén Itzá. Many travellers stop here between the coast and Mérida.

Safety

Valladolid is one of the safest towns in Mexico, with a sleepy, small-town feel and very low crime; walking the centre at night is normal. The main risks are practical: brutal midday heat, deep cenote water (wear the free life vests if you're not a strong swimmer), and sun. Use reef-safe sunscreen before cenote swims to protect the water.
