Vienna in 5 days

Day 1, Get oriented

Base: Innere Stadt, The Ring-bound old town. Stephansdom, Hofburg, every postcard view.

Morning: Schönbrunn at opening. 9am entry, gardens free, the Gloriette views beat the palace itself.

Afternoon: Explore Innere Stadt, The Ring-bound old town. Stephansdom, Hofburg, every postcard view.

Evening: Standing-room at the Staatsoper. Queue 80 minutes before curtain. World-class opera for 13 EUR.

Day 2, Iconic sights

Base: Neubau (7th), Concept stores, indie cafés, the city's creative quarter.

Morning: Kunsthistorisches Museum. Bruegel, Vermeer, and a café inside the dome. Half a day, easy.

Day 3, Local neighbourhoods

Base: Leopoldstadt (2nd), Across the canal, hipster brunches and the Prater.

Morning: Coffee and cake in a grand café. Vienna's coffeehouse culture is UNESCO-listed. Settle into Café Central or Café Sperl with a melange and a slice of Sachertorte, linger for hours, that's the whole point.

Afternoon: Explore Leopoldstadt (2nd), Across the canal, hipster brunches and the Prater.

Evening: Schönbrunn Palace and gardens. The Habsburgs' summer palace, with opulent state rooms and vast free gardens. Tour the interior early, then climb to the Gloriette for a coffee and a view back over the city.

Eat: Käsekrainer from a Würstelstand at 1am

Day 4, Day trip or nature

Base: Wieden (4th), Naschmarkt on your doorstep, walkable to everything.

Morning: Café Jelinek - tiny, smoky, no laptops, locals only.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Afternoon: Explore Wieden (4th), Naschmarkt on your doorstep, walkable to everything.

Evening: Third Man Museum - obsessive shrine to the 1949 Vienna noir film.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Eat: Sachertorte at Café Sacher (or Demel - pick your team)

Day 5, Slow finish

Base: Grinzing, Edge-of-city wine villages with traditional Heurigen taverns.

Morning: Volksgarten roses in early June, free and empty.. A local favourite most visitors miss, worth the detour.

Getting around

U-Bahn is fast, clean and runs 24h on weekends. A 72-hour ticket is 17.10 EUR. The centre is fully walkable - most of your day will be on foot.

Safety

Vienna is among the safest capitals in the world. Pickpockets work the U1 line near tourist stops. Otherwise nothing to flag.
