Getting around

The city centre around Malioboro and the kraton is walkable, and cheap becak or andong (horse-cart) rides cover short hops. App-based ride-hailing (Gojek and Grab) is the easiest and cheapest way to get around, including bikes for solo travellers. Borobudur and Prambanan are 40 to 60 minutes out, best reached by a hired driver, tour or ride-hailing car.

Safety

Yogyakarta is one of Indonesia's safest and most relaxed cities, comfortable for solo travellers including women, with violent crime rare. Standard precautions cover the main risks: petty theft in crowded markets, overcharging by some drivers (use metered ride apps), and the equatorial heat. Dress modestly at temples and the kraton, and carry water for long temple days.
