  • Best time to visit: May-June and September-October
  • Average daily budget: $90 to $180 USD

Getting around

Faro Airport is 40 minutes away by taxi, shuttle or bus, and the A22 motorway links the whole Algarve. Albufeira's train station sits 6km inland at Ferreiras, connected by bus. The old town and Strip are walkable but separated by a hilly 25-minute walk, so most people taxi between them; renting a car is the best way to reach Marinha, Lagos and Sagres.

Safety

Albufeira is safe, though the Strip gets rowdy in summer and Portugal now fines antisocial behaviour and public drinking outside licensed areas. Atlantic currents and shore breaks are strong: swim at flagged beaches and heed red flags. Cliff edges at Falésia and Marinha crumble, so stay behind barriers. Book Benagil boats with licensed operators only, and expect cancellations in swell.

Frequently asked questions

How many days do you need in Albufeira?

Four to five days. That covers the old town and local beaches, a Benagil cave boat trip, the Falésia cliff walk, and a day trip west to Lagos and Sagres or east to Ria Formosa. A full week suits a family beach holiday with slower days.

Is Albufeira worth visiting?

Yes, if you want the Algarve's easiest mix of beach, restaurants and nightlife with a real old town attached. It is the region's busiest resort, so purists prefer Tavira or Lagos, but no other Algarve base has this range of beaches and boat trips within 30 minutes.

Is Albufeira just a party resort?

No, though the Strip in Areias de São João has that reputation. The old town is family-oriented, Olhos de Água and Falésia are quiet, and the nightlife is geographically contained, so choosing your neighbourhood decides the trip you get.

How do you visit the Benagil cave from Albufeira?

Take a boat tour from Albufeira marina, roughly 90 minutes to three hours, or drive 30 minutes west to Benagil and take a shorter local boat or kayak. Swimming into the cave is banned and landing inside is now restricted, so plan on viewing it from the water.

When is the best time to visit Albufeira?

May to June and September to October give warm sea, reliable sun and far fewer crowds than the July and August peak, when prices roughly double. Winter is mild at 16 to 18C and good for walking and golf, but many beach restaurants close.

What are the best beaches in Albufeira?

Praia dos Pescadores below the old town, Praia da Oura for facilities, Praia de Falésia for its six kilometres of red cliffs, and Praia da Coelha for a quieter cove. Praia da Marinha and Benagil, both about 30 minutes west, are the most spectacular in the region.

Is Albufeira expensive?

It is good value by Western European standards. Budget $90 to $180 a day. A grilled fish dinner runs $15 to $25, a Benagil boat trip $30 to $55, sunbeds about $20 a pair, and accommodation is cheap outside July and August, when it can triple.
