Hidden gems
- Praia da Marinha and Praia de Benagil, 30 minutes west, for the Algarve's best cliffscapes.
- The Seven Hanging Valleys trail from Carvoeiro to Marinha at sunrise.
- Olhos de Água's freshwater springs bubbling through the sand at low tide.
- Paderne castle and the Roman bridge inland, with barely another visitor.
Getting around
Faro Airport is 40 minutes away by taxi, shuttle or bus, and the A22 motorway links the whole Algarve. Albufeira's train station sits 6km inland at Ferreiras, connected by bus. The old town and Strip are walkable but separated by a hilly 25-minute walk, so most people taxi between them; renting a car is the best way to reach Marinha, Lagos and Sagres.
Safety
Albufeira is safe, though the Strip gets rowdy in summer and Portugal now fines antisocial behaviour and public drinking outside licensed areas. Atlantic currents and shore breaks are strong: swim at flagged beaches and heed red flags. Cliff edges at Falésia and Marinha crumble, so stay behind barriers. Book Benagil boats with licensed operators only, and expect cancellations in swell.
