Antigua claims a beach for every day of the year, and the claim holds up: powder sand and glass-clear water are never more than a short drive away. English Harbour adds real history with Nelson's Dockyard, a UNESCO-listed Georgian naval base still full of yachts. Joy Plus mixes the famous beaches with viewpoints, Sunday parties and the local food beyond the resorts.

Getting around
V. C. Bird International is close to St. John's and the northern resorts, with most transfers under 30 minutes. Public minibuses are very cheap and connect St. John's with the west and south, but they stop by early evening and don't serve the far east well. Taxis are unmetered with government-set rates, so confirm the fare beforehand. A rental car is the best way to beach-hop; driving is on the left and a local permit is issued at pickup.
Safety
Antigua is one of the calmer Caribbean islands and violent crime against visitors is rare, but opportunistic theft from cars, beaches and unlocked rooms happens. Keep valuables out of sight and use the room safe. Some beaches have sudden drop-offs and strong currents on the Atlantic side, so favour the sheltered west coast for swimming. Roads are narrow with unmarked speed bumps, so drive slowly, especially after dark.
Frequently asked questions
How many days do you need in Antigua?
Five to seven days lets you settle in properly: several beach days across the west and south coasts, a half day at Nelson's Dockyard and English Harbour, a Sunday evening at Shirley Heights, a catamaran or snorkelling trip, and ideally a full day trip to Barbuda's pink-sand beaches. Three or four days covers the highlights if you are short on time.
When is the best time to visit Antigua?
December to April is the dry, breezy high season with the most reliable weather and highest prices. May and June are excellent value with warm seas and occasional showers. Late August to October is the wettest and highest-risk hurricane period. Sailing Week in late April and Antigua Carnival in late July and early August bring the biggest crowds and atmosphere.
Which is the best beach in Antigua?
For calm, clear swimming, the west coast beaches like Ffryes, Darkwood and Valley Church are hard to beat. Dickenson Bay is the liveliest with watersports and bars. Half Moon Bay on the east coast is the most dramatic and least developed. Since conditions change with the wind, the smart approach is to pick the leeward side on breezy days.
Is Antigua good for solo travellers?
Yes. It is safe by regional standards, easy to navigate, and English Harbour's sailing crowd makes it unusually sociable, especially in season. Catamaran day trips and Sunday nights at Shirley Heights are easy places to meet people. Guesthouses around Jolly Harbour and English Harbour cost far less than the all-inclusive resorts that dominate the north.
Do you need a car in Antigua?
It helps a lot if beach-hopping is your priority, since the best stretches are spread around the coast and buses do not reach many of them. Driving is on the left, roads are narrow and speed bumps are frequent but manageable. If you plan to stay put at a resort and take a couple of excursions, taxis and tours are perfectly adequate.
Is Antigua expensive?
It sits in the mid-to-upper range for the Caribbean. All-inclusive resorts and English Harbour restaurants are pricey, but self-catering apartments around Jolly Harbour, local roti and pepperpot lunches, public minibuses and free beaches keep costs reasonable. Budget roughly $120 to $230 a day for a comfortable mid-range trip including food, transport and one activity.
Is Barbuda worth visiting from Antigua?
Yes, if you have a spare day and calm seas. The ferry takes around 90 minutes and delivers you to an almost empty island with miles of pink-tinged sand and one of the world's largest frigatebird colonies. It is a long day and services are limited, so book the boat and a local guide in advance and bring water and food.
